Playa del Carmen, Mexico lies halfway between Cancun on the north and the ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum on the south. Set on a coastal strip of mangrove swamps, jungle and miles of white sand beaches known as the Riviera Mayan, Playa del Carmen attracts visitors from around the world. Once a small Mayan village known as Xaman-Ha (waters of the north), Playa Del Carmen has become the second most important destination in the Mexican Caribbean. Life in Playa is characterized by relaxed diversity and yet somehow manages to maintain the charm of a small-town seaside destination. Playa has a wide variety of vacation rentals, grand resorts, and hotels along with snack-bars, fine restaurants and stores. To get to Playa Del Carmen, tourists generally fly to the Cancun airport and transfer to Playa, which is an hour's drive. Playa Del Carmen proper stretches from the beach west to highway 307 and beyond, however, the tourist area is mostly along the coast. Macation rentals in Playa del Carmen include those at Paseo Del Sol and at Luna Encantada. The Reviera Mayan is well known for it's green jungles, clear aqua waters, white sand beaches and lovely resorts. It is also a destination for a myriad of activities including scuba diving. A number of dive shops are close by to assist you in arranging guided tours of scuba diving spots around Playa del Carmen.
